About the Center

Facilities

The Center is located on the campus of Nanjing University, one of China's foremost academic institutions. Built specifically to house this institution, the modern facility includes dormitory rooms and residential apartments for students and professors, a library, a student computer room with 8 computers and a networked printer, a cafeteria, two auditoriums, faculty, student and residential lounges, classrooms, and administrative offices. Unlike most buildings in Nanjing, the entire Center is heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer. Its laundry room is equipped with coin-operated washers and dryers.

Dormitory

International certificate students are paired with Chinese students in the Center's dormitory wing. Many students find that this is one of the most valuable aspects of the Center experience, but making the roommate relationship work is also one of the greatest challenges students face at the Center.

Double rooms are comfortable, with a bed and desk for each student, carpeting, a telephone, ample closet space, and an attached bath (toilet, sink, and shower) with western fixtures. Hot water is available in student rooms throughout the day.  Wired and wireless internet access is available in every dormitory room, and wireless access is available throughout the Center.

Apartments

The Samuel Pollard building houses apartments for faculty, research fellows, staff members, and visitors to the Center.  Apartments have one, two, or three bedrooms and a kitchen (oven, stove, sink, refrigerator), bathroom, and living room.  Filtered and treated drinking water is available in all apartments as well as in the public restrooms in the Samuel Pollard Building.

Library

A highlight of the Center, the library occupies most of the third and fourth floors of the Samuel Pollard Building and houses some of the best resources in China on Sino-Western relations.

Abundant natural light and ample reading carrels, couches and meetings rooms provide students with a pleasing study environment. The uncensored, open stacks contain more than 100,000 English and Chinese volumes and 400 periodicals, including the International Herald Tribune, Asian Wall Street Journal, The Economist and the South China Morning Post. Computers in the library are library terminals access the library’s electronic card catalog, electronic databases including LexisNexis and First Search, and the Center's Electronic Reserve (ERes) system, which hosts course syllabi and readings.  All of the library’s electronic resources are also accessible throughout the Center via wired and wireless internet connections.

The master’s student study wing is also located on the third floor of the Samuel Pollard Building, with direct access to the library when the library is open.  The wing includes assigned study carrels and a common pantry and lounge area for the exclusive use of master’s students.

Student Lounge

A lounge with armchairs, mah jongg tables, a flat-screen TV and a bar area is available 24 hours a day. The lounge is used for movie and television viewing (the Center subscribes to CNN International, Star TV, and Chinese cable television channels) and get-togethers of all kinds, including happy hours, receptions, holiday celebrations, and musical performances.  It is also a popular venue for late-night study sessions.

Cafeteria

The Center’s cafeteria provides simple, inexpensive and tasty food throughout the semester. It is also a good place to meet and talk with other students and faculty. There are also various dining options outside of the Center.  A German bakery, Mexican, French, Indian, Korean, and Italian restaurants, and a variety of small Chinese restaurants are nearby. Noodles, jiaozi, guotie, hundun, shaobing, and youtiao can be purchased cheaply within a two-minute walk from the Center.
