国际政治 International Politics Fall 2009 当代中美关系 Contemporary Sino-U.S. Relations Beginning with the “Open Door” policy, this course looks at American aid to China in World War II, the U.S. role in the conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Guomindang, the roles of the two countries during the Cold War and important issues in contemporary Sino-American relations. Professor Ren Donglai 当代中国对外政策 Contemporary Chinese Foreign Policy An in-depth examination of historical and current policies of China in foreign affairs, with special emphasis on China’s growing influence on the international state. Students analyze the basic theory and methodology of Chinese policymakers and examine key factors that influence foreign policy decisions. Professor Cai Jiahe 战略研究 Strategic Studies This course provides an overview of the relationship between politics and the many kinds of military power, from terrorism threatened by small, non-state groups to relations among superpowers. Professor Zhou Guiyin 比较政治 Comparative Politics This course looks at the internal politics of major nation-states and the ways in which internal politics affect international behaviors. Topics include a look at internal politics within the leading nations and the problems associated with colonial expansion. Topics include investment law, labor law, taxation, banking, insurance, corporate liability, and relationships between Chinese domestic law and international trade agreements. Topics include secession, law of the sea, regulating the use of force, refugees and human rights. Emphasis will be given to understanding the government and the economy, as well as cultural education and social development in China. Students will learn about Mao Zedong’s Open Door Policy and how this has impacted the development of Chinese society over the last 20 years. How have China’s opening to the outside world, WTO accession, increase in labor mobility and growing economic disparities transformed urban and rural China? This course will look at such issues as environmental concerns, income inequality, the migrant population and social welfare. Professor Zhai Xuewei 少数民族与中国社会 Ethnic Minorities in Chinese Society This course studies the formation and development of national minority groups in Chinese society by looking at the tribal identities and tribal psychology among these national minorities. It will investigate the theoretical basis behind the making of minority policy in China’s political system as well as lessons learned from this policy over the past 50 years. Professor Hua Tao 中国信仰体系 Religion Systems in China This class is an introduction to ancient Chinese culture and the three schools of religious thought. Particular emphasis will be placed on the history and growth of Confucianism and Daoism and the relationship between the two. Students will also discuss ancient Chinese culture and the impact it has on modern day life, and analyze the importance of Chinese culture on society in China and around the globe.
