Beginning with the “Open Door” policy, this course looks at American aid to China in World War II, the U.S. role in the conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Guomindang, the roles of the two countries during the Cold War and important issues in contemporary Sino-American relations.  Professor Ren Donglai

An in-depth examination of historical and current policies of China in foreign affairs, with special emphasis on China’s growing influence on the international state. This course examines the Cold War period with particular attention to the changing style of international relations during this time. Topics include a look at internal politics within the leading nations and the problems associated with colonial expansion.  Professor Ren Donglai

Chinese Economic and Commercial Laws
This course will provide a history of the development of Chinese economic and commercial law, and a survey of the laws and practices of greatest importance to entrepreneurs and policy makers. Topics include investment law, labor law, taxation, banking, insurance, corporate liability, and relationships between Chinese domestic law and international trade agreements. This introductory course examines the nature and sources of the rules that bind states and transnational actors in their relations with one another. Topics include secession, law of the sea, regulating the use of force, refugees and human rights. This course studies the formation and development of national minority groups in Chinese society by looking at the tribal identities and tribal psychology among these national minorities. It will investigate the theoretical basis behind the making of minority policy in China’s political system as well as lessons learned from this policy over the past 50 years.  Professor Hua Tao

This class is an introduction to ancient Chinese culture and the three schools of religious thought. Particular emphasis will be placed on the history and growth of Confucianism and Daoism and the relationship between the two.
