All applicants are required to take either the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) or the Center for Applied Linguistics Chinese (CAL) proficiency test. Applicants scoring below the required minimum may still be admitted on a conditional basis and would be required to retake the Chinese language proficiency test or attend a summer language program prior to matriculation at the Center. Students who intend to have further Chinese language study between taking the test and enrolling in the program should make this clear on the application, as this information can play a role in admissions decisions. Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) Proficiency Test
Description The CAL test is used as one measure of Chinese competence for admission to the Hopkins-Nanjing Center. It is composed of three sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension and grammar/structure. The test is presented in both traditional and simplified characters so that the applicant can use whichever s/he is more comfortable with. It is a multiple-choice, machine-scored test that takes just over two hours to administer. We have found students are generally pleasantly surprised by their score. We hope that all interested students will take the test to gauge their level rather than assuming their language ability is not high enough. You may know more than you think! Testing Procedures The applicant should first find a proctor (a professor or supervisor at work) who will agree to administer the test and then complete the CAL Test Request Form. Test materials will be mailed directly to the proctor, so be sure to include the proctor's current mailing address. Please mail or fax the form along with your $85 application fee to: The Hopkins-Nanjing Center Admissions Office, Rm 406 1740 Massachusetts Avenue NW Washington DC 20036 Fax # 202.663.7729 After testing, the proctor should return the test materials to Washington for scoring, which takes 2-3 weeks after receipt. A score of 90 out of 150 is required for admission to the Certificate program. A score of 110 or above is required for admission to the Master's program. Students may also email nanjing@jhu.edu with the information requested on the form to expedite the process. This is encouraged for tests requested in January. Applicants who do not achieve the minimum scores required for admission will be able to re-take the test once. Anyone re-taking the test will be charged $25. Completed CAL tests should be returned to the Washington Office by January 21, 2010 for students applying for Fall 2010 entry. 2009-2010 CAL Test Dates The CAL test will be offered at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing on December 18, 2009 at 3pm. Please contact Julie Sisk at jsisk@hnc.nju.edu.cn to sign up for the Nanjing test date or inquire about the possibility of other testing dates. For students in the DC area, we also administer exams in our Massachusetts Avenue office. Please email nanjing@jhu.edu to sign up. You may also request individual dates.

Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Examination Students who choose to take the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) examination should refer to the HSK website for information on nearest testing locations and upcoming test dates. A passing score on the HSK Level 5 exam is required for admission to the Certificate program. The HSK Level 6 examination is required for admission to the M.A. program. Generally students currently located in China opt to take this test, though there are also U.S. test locations and dates.
