Joint Academic Committee (JAC) Per the Memorandum of Understanding, a Joint Academic Committee (JAC) of faculty and staff from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and Nanjing University (NJU) meet each year to discuss the status of the certificate program and the Master of Arts in International Studies (MAIS) and select faculty from among prescreened applicants. In a three-year period, the JAC will meet in Nanjing twice and Washington once. The JAC met in in Washington, DC in January 2009 and will meet in Nanjing in January 2010 and 2011. Faculty selection is the JAC’s key responsibility and is based on the following criteria: Appropriate terminal degrees. Institution where terminal degree received. List of academic publications. Familiarity with recent and international literature in their fields. Current teaching position. Quality of teaching. Outstanding teaching records attested to in student evaluations. Previous teaching experience. Length of commitment to the Center. Interest in serving as academic and master’s thesis advisors. Record of interest in building academic institutions, through service on library and curriculum committees. Applicability of candidate’s experience to HNC planned course offerings. Ability to interact with students and colleagues. Interest in the structure and mission of the Center. Interest in contributing to the daily life of the Center community.
