Chinese and international scholars who are not participants in the Center’s programs may request access to Center facilities and resources. A limited number of “Library Readerships” and “Affiliated Scholar” positions are available, for a fee, while the Center is in regular session. These positions are allocated on a semester basis, roughly from mid-September to mid-January (first semester) and mid-February to mid-June (second semester). They are not available during the summer vacation period (mid-June to mid-September) and the Chinese New Year vacation period (mid-January to mid-February). The exact dates will vary slightly from year to year. Professors, advanced graduate students, and academic or corporate researchers who wish to obtain Library Readerships or to be Affiliated Scholars are invited to apply in writing via email to the Center’s two directors, Dr. Jan Kiely and Mme. Huang Chengfeng. The application must include a current CV and a letter in Chinese or English that states reasons for wishing to use the Center library or to be affiliated with the Center. Affiliated Scholar applicants must be resident in Nanjing for at least thirty consecutive days during the semester.
Library Readership A Library Readership allows the holder to use library facilities and resources during regular library hours when the Center is in session (8:00am to midnight, Monday – Thursday; 8:00am to 6:00pm, Friday; 10:00am to 6:00pm, Saturday; 1:00pm to midnight, Sunday). Library hours are subject to change during holidays. The Library Readership applies to only one person, and it is not transferrable. The fee for a Library Readership status is RMB 3,500 per semester. The fee may be waived for eligible scholars who reside in the Center for fifteen or more consecutive days during the semester.
Affiliated Scholar Affiliated scholars are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the intellectual and social life of the Center. They are entitled to the full range of Library Readership privileges and additional borrowing privileges, are invited to attend and participate in faculty luncheon seminars, general lectures, public workshops and conferences, receptions, and a variety of Center community social events. Affiliated scholars may rent Center apartments, subject to availability, at a thirty-percent discount off the standard rates. Whether or not they reside at the Center, they may reserve guest rooms at the Center for their guests, subject to availability, at a ten-percent discount off the standard room rates. Affiliated scholars may reserve Center conference facilities for conferences, workshops, or seminars, at a ten-percent discount off the standard rates. The fee for Affiliated Scholar status is RMB 7,000 per semester. An affiliated scholar who rents a Center apartment for a minimum of thirty consecutive days in one semester will be considered a “Scholar-in-Residence” and will receive a fifty-percent discount on the Affiliated Scholar fee for that semester, in addition to the thirty-percent discount on the room fee. A “Scholar-in-Residence” who rents a Center apartment for sixty or more consecutive days in one semester will be granted a full waiver of the Affiliated Scholar fee for that semester.
